Down, But Not Out

It's been a busy two months for me between wrapping up my current job and doing a bunch of work on a 1900's-era house I bought recently, so I haven't had much time for blogging. I do plan on getting back into it, but it'll be a couple more weeks before I can get back to regular posting. I've been working intermittently on updating the gear calculator spreadsheet, so should hopefully have an improved version when I start posting again, and I'm looking forward to delving into how the 2.4 changes (once they're fully announced) will affect our class. So stay tuned, but it'll be a few more weeks, I'm afraid.

Awesome. Do you plan on changing value of MP5 since patch 2.3?

Anonymous said...

Thanks - I'm eagerly awaiting an update to your spreadsheet with respec to mana regen. No only did 2.3 introduce major mana regen to resto shammys, the new 2.4 spirit/int mana regen model appears to drastically boost the value of spirit and int, and devalue MP5.

I'd hate for this conclusion to be true: but my initial examination seems to indicate we'll be rolling against priests and druids for +spirit healing cloth/leather to replace our mail gear.

The 2.4 badge gear will change your gear lists quite a bit I think. Check out mmo-champion and see what I mean. The new pants and healing mace are just crazy, as is the new healing belt.

Shaman

* Call of Thunder: (Rank 5) now gives 5% critical strike chance.

* Earth Shield: Mana cost reduced roughly in half, and charges reduced from 10 to 6.

* Elemental Focus: This buff will no longer be removed when Shamanistic Focus is triggered.

* Ghost Wolf: Cast time reduced to 2 seconds, down from 3.

* Healing Grace: This talent now reduces the chance your spells will be dispelled by 10/20/30%.The resistance to being dispelled modifier from this talent now applies correctly to Water Breathing.

* Nature’s Swiftness and Elemental Mastery now share a 10 second cooldown.

* Rockbiter Weapon: Tooltip and error messages have been adjusted slightly.

* Stormstrike has a new icon.

* Totem timer icons will now show up under your player portrait when you cast totem spells. Right-clicking a totem timer icon will destroy that totem.

* Tremor Totem now pulses every 3 seconds, down from 4.

* The Shaman spell Fire Nova Totem will no longer sometimes detonate without doing any damage.

Not very well apparently - the NS + EM nerf to elemental shammy is really going to hurt, especially in the arena.

Why Blizzard continues to nerf an already lackluster class is well beyond me at this point.

Hello LOTRO - goodbye WOW

No.

Pulled from EJ: "Patch 2.4
* Spirit-Based Mana Regeneration: This system has been adjusted so that as your intellect rises, you will regenerate more mana per point of spirit.

So what does this mean for Shaman?

Very little.

The change only affects mana regeneration outside of the 5-second rule. Most shaman spend close to 100% of their time within the five second rule. This is primarily due to the fact that 1) We lack HoTs 2) If we’re not healing, we are dropping totems and refreshing Water Shield.

Spirit remains mostly irrelevant when evaluating gear.

However, we are going to see an increase in our mana regeneration outside the FSR. The average shaman (with full raid buffs including spirit) will gain about 116 mp5 while not casting. Divine Spirit alone will be worth an extra 36 mp5 while not casting.

You may also hear a lot of talk about how certain elixirs and flasks will become better choices. Nothing has changed for the shaman class in this regard.

Well Fed +8 mp5 > Well Fed +20 spirit
Flask of Restoration > Flask of Distilled Wisdom

Let’s take the following example.

Buffed = Arcane Int, BoK, BoW, Mark, Divine Spirit, Improved Mana Spring, Water shield
NOTE: You can get another 49 mp5 while casting from food, oils and a flask.

How can I see how this change will affect my mana regen outside the 5-second rule?

To input your own spirit, intellect and mp5, I recommend using one of these spreadsheets: http://shannonskipper.googlepages.com/MP5.xls

Please be aware that the authors are still refining the spreadsheet and it is often updated a few times each day. Also, please note that I modified my spreadsheet to include water shield and that is not yet an option on the original spreadsheet (although I requested the author add it).

If you really want to get into the nitty gritty details of the change (you math lovers), here is the EJ thread on the topic:

Does anyone know of another good resto shaman blog that is updated regularly?

i just found your great blog. your item charts are a godsend. i hope to read more from you soon!

I hope you come back. Very interested in how you will rate the new gear.

Anonymous said...

If you're really that interested, you can just open up the spreadsheet and start adding items in.
I don't believe that the spirit change will affect item rankings at all, so all the values there will still be relevant in 2.4.

I love your site and hope you come back and share your thoughts on where the new 2.4 drops and badge gear fit into the rankings.

Hope all is well! The shammy community misses you!

I truly appreciate your efforts on keeping us all informed of the theorycrafting for resto shamans. I have difficulty finding sites with similar detail and results.

However, I sorely miss your involvement from the new 2.4 patch. Particularly on Spell Haste. Big questions arise like, how much +heal should you have to even start considering haste, and also apart from our mana requirements in long fights, how much MP5 would be the minimum amount required in order to fully appreciate the haste gear?

Hope you can post something on haste soon.

I have been a long time reader, and have also appreciated the effort you have put into your site. As well I have lots of mileage in your gear spreadhseet. Pure awesomeness. For a resto shaman with not much time spent outside the game doing research, it is a perfect guide for me. I have added in the badge and other drop loots I have found that are not in the list and it works great. Only thing is whether there will be significany changes to the formulae based on recent class changes and the haste gear? But so far so good... Thank you!

This is a great list. I've found myself in a rut- healing reg. 5 mans is easy, but I'm running short for heroics, and need just a little more mp5 and HB to go on. Nothing has dropped for me the last few runs...which led me to here :) Thank you much for taking the time to weigh and post everything.
